It is still one of the finest goals ever scored in English football, a gem from 1979 that stands the test of time and the intense appraisal of passing generations. It came at Burnden Park as Frank Worthington, the Bolton Wanderers No 10, received the ball with his back to the Ipswich Town goal.

What came next embodied why Worthington will always be loved as one of the game’s great entertainers, a maverick with adventure in his soul and magic in his boots. Football is saddened by the news of his death, aged 72, after a long illness.
