As Liverpool seek to add to their forward options this summer, plenty of names have been linked with a move to Anfield.
With other positions to strengthen, too, a more typical Liverpool signing might be required – one that has untapped quality that would arrive relatively cheaply.
And that is where Barcelona-linked Memphis Depay comes into the equation.
Memphis’ contract is set to expire in France this summer, with Barcelona most heavily linked with a move for him – like Gini Wijnaldum, the Dutch international is a player that Ronald Koeman knows well.
“Memphis would be an opportunist signing,” said Dan Morgan on the Liverpool.com podcast.
“He does a lot of number nine stuff but is a different option to someone like Haaland.

“He is a bit like Salah in that it is almost like he has gone away and worked on his core strength and his physical attributes as much as his technical ones.

“He gives you variance in attack and Liverpool have to spot value and opportunity.”
Memphis has scored 14 league goals this season from an expected goals total of 11.74, with 15 goals and nine assists in all competitions from 31 appearances across the campaign.
That level of contribution is not a one-off, either, with the Dutch winger producing 121 goal contributions in 169 appearances for Lyon in total since signing for them from PSV.
