As Liverpool seek to add to their forward options this summer, plenty of names have been linked with a move to Anfield.

But while the obvious names might be Erling Haaland or Kylian Mbappe, there is no suggestion that Liverpool would be able to fund a move for either up-and-coming star.

With other positions to strengthen, too, a more typical Liverpool signing might be required – one that has untapped quality that would arrive relatively cheaply.

And that is where Barcelona-linked Memphis Depay comes into the equation.

Memphis’ contract is set to expire in France this summer, with Barcelona most heavily linked with a move for him – like Gini Wijnaldum, the Dutch international is a player that Ronald Koeman knows well.

“Memphis would be an opportunist signing,” said Dan Morgan on the Liverpool.com podcast.

“He does a lot of number nine stuff but is a different option to someone like Haaland.

“With his back to goal, he is really underrated, and like Mohamed Salah, who people remembered for his Chelsea days, Memphis is a completely different player to his Manchester United days.

“He is a bit like Salah in that it is almost like he has gone away and worked on his core strength and his physical attributes as much as his technical ones.

“He gives you variance in attack and Liverpool have to spot value and opportunity.”

Memphis has scored 14 league goals this season from an expected goals total of 11.74, with 15 goals and nine assists in all competitions from 31 appearances across the campaign.

That level of contribution is not a one-off, either, with the Dutch winger producing 121 goal contributions in 169 appearances for Lyon in total since signing for them from PSV.

Still only 27, Memphis would not demand a transfer fee at all unless Lyon can convince him to sign an extension. They are hopeful of doing so, but that has not happened yet and like Wijnaldum, time is quickly ticking by.

It might not be Memphis, but what Liverpool and FSG’s previous strategy has shown – even when they signed the world-class Thiago Alcantara for a cut-price £25m last summer – is that opportunistic signings tend to be more likely than the obvious ones.

That strategy has always been clear, whether it be for Salah, Sadio Mane or Diogo Jota, making that kind of move the most likely as the summer transfer window nears.
