Ederson: His pass broke the press and set up the first goal for Manchester City, but couldn’t have stopped any of the three goals. His wait to secure the Golden Glove outright goes to the last day. 7

Cancelo: A red card might have been harsh for the ‘challenge’ on Danny Welbeck, but Cancelo didn’t deal with the long ball and put his teammates right in it. With Walker ‘not fit’ and Cancelo now suspended, there might be a problem at right-back vs Everton. 4

Stones: Recalled alongside Ruben Dias, Stones did nothing wrong to suggest he isn’t first in line to partner Dias in the Champions League final, but three goals against hasn’t secured his place just yet. 6

Dias: Solid as ever, making some good interceptions in the first half. When City needed to stand firm at the back, Dias put himself in front of everything once again, but like Stones, might have done more to stop the first and third goals. 6

Zinchenko: Back at left-back, Zinchenko didn’t have much to do, but did everything asked of him. With Cancelo’s red card and Benjamin Mendy out of favour, it’s his place to lose vs Chelsea. 6

Rodri: Solid in the first half, and did well to protect the defence after the red card alongside Gundogan, but awful blind backpass for Brighton’s goal, and a shaky response still leaves question marks over his final place. 5

Gundogan: Great run and header for the opening goal. Led by example when City needed to stand up against 11 men. City will hope the failure of the referee to protect him against some strong tackles won’t be costly. 7

Bernardo: Initially a central midfielder, and then an attacking midfielder after the reshuffle, Bernardo was tireless as usual and never let Brighton settle. A performance that might have played him back into the final XI after Torres’ heroics at Newcastle. 6

Mahrez: Lovely cross for Gundogan’s goal and always an option on the right. Limited to a more defensive role, he did well and was one of the players who Guardiola will look to as putting a proper shift in for the team effort. 7

Foden: Received very close treatment from Brighton but always found space and a pass. Kept the shape well after the red card and showed how far his tactical game has come on this season. A superb solo goal should have taken the pressure off City and earned applause from the home crowd. 8

Torres: Looked lively before being sacrificed following Cancelo’s red card. Unfortunate to be replaced, and might have lost his chance of playing his way into the Champions League final XI through no fault of his own. 6

Garcia (on 16): Solid in unfamiliar right-back role, and made some good clearances. But like his other defenders was part of a back line that conceded three. 6

Fernandinho (on 56): Replaced the injured Gundogan and harried well in defensive midfield. 6
