Manchester United have identified Pau Torres as a potential arrival this summer and the defender is keen on a move.

However, that would give Harry Maguire a major issue in the backline.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a number of transfer targets going into the summer window at the end of the season.

Several have been linked including Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish and Jadon Sancho.

But it is in defence where the Red Devils coach wants to improve strongly with the likes of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof proving unreliable.

Solskjaer wants someone who he can play next to Maguire without worry of fitness and injury.

It has led the club to Villarreal star Torres, who has had a fine season under Unai Emery this campaign.

Known for his speed and heading ability, the Spaniard appears to be the right man to be partnered up with Maguire.

And according to the Manchester Evening News, the 24-year-old is interested in signing for the Red Devils.

One major bonus would be the fact he is left-footed, an attribute that would come in handy when playing out from the back as it opens up the pitch much more.

Torres plays on the left-hand side of the two centre-backs – but that is also where Maguire prefers to play.

Not only is that where the England international has played at Old Trafford, but also his position while at Leicester and Hull.

One of the reasons why Maguire is so highly-rated is his ability to bring the ball out from defence, which he does well from the left-sided position to cut diagonal passes forward.

It would mean that the United captain would have to move position and take up a new role in the back-four.

Lindelof has been the preferred option over Bailly but it remains to be seen what their futures have in store should Torres sign.

United are not the only ones interested in the Villarreal defender.

Manchester City are also monitoring the Spain international, while Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are interested too, report MEN.
