Follow all the action as the second day of The Masters gets underway at Augusta, following a dramatic opening round which saw Justin Rose surge to a four-shot lead thanks to an spectacular round of 65 on Thursday.

After making two bogies in his opening seven holes, Rose suddenly found a golden touch as he went nine under through his next 11 to take the clubhouse lead ahead of Brian Harman and Hideki Matsuyama (both -3).

It was a chastening opening day for some of the pre-tournament favourites, however, with Bryson DeChambeau and Rory McIlroy both struggling. The big-hitting American carded a 4-over-par 76, while McIlroy shot the same score in an error-strewn round that also saw the Northern Irishman hit his own father with a wayward shot. Both of those players have work to do if they are to make the cut, with the lowest 50 players making it to the weekend.

Elsewhere, players will be jostling for position in an attempt to make up ground on Rose. Jordan Spieth, Shane Lowry and Tyrell Hatton are six shots back at -1, while defending champion Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bob MacIntyre, Tommy Fleetwood and Matthew Fitzpatrick are in a group further behind at +2.

THE MASTERS 2021: MATSUYAMA DROPS SHOT AT 16

The vast majority of players are back into the clubhouse but Hideki Matsuyama, who started the day at three-under-par, is still out there. He’s just dropped a shot at 16, though, having failed to find the top-tier with his tee-shot, and misses a 6ft putt for par. He has the chance to recover immediately at the 17th after a brilliant approach leaves 12ft for birdie but that goes begging, too. He remains at -4 and, despite those misses, is still very much in contention.

THE MASTERS 2021: HARMAN CLOSES AT -6

Brian Harman continues to quietly rise up the leaderboard. The American is one of the PGA Tour’s shorter hitters but, as we have already seen, distance is by no means a guarantee of success at Augusta. Harman shot a 69 yesterday and a closing birdie sees him match that total today to join Will Zalatoris in second. Meanwhile, Kim pars the 18th despite not having a putter at his disposal and he sits three shots off the lead at -4.

THE MASTERS 2021: KIM’S PUTTER OUT OF ACTION

Si Woo Kim’s temper has flared over at 15 after a dire chip and, while waiting to putt, he has jammed the blade into the turf in anger and seemingly bent it beyond recognition. He proceeds to hit a lovely approach into 16 but has to use a 3-wood on the green. A lovely lag putt, all things considered, but he’s done himself no favours, having been firmly in contention.

THE MASTERS 2021: ZALATORIS MOVES INTO TIE FOR SECOND

Will Zalatoris was tipped by Butch Harmon heading into this week and the 24-year-old American debutant is certainly starting to deliver on that promise. After an impressive 70 yesterday, he has tapped into a great vein of form on the back nine, with four birdies seeing him surge into a share of second place.

THE MASTERS 2021: THOMAS AND FINAU FALTER AT THE LAST

Careless putts at the last from both Thomas and Finau see them drop back to four under in a somewhat sour end to two otherwise magnificent rounds. Spieth makes no such mistake, though, and taps in for par to finish with a 68. All three are in prime position heading into the weekend. Meanwhile, still out on the course, Kim continues to impress, a birdie on 13 taking him to -5.

THE MASTERS 2021: SPIETH BIRDIES 17

Another wonderful piece of play from Jordan Spieth, birdieing the 17th, and he moves to five-under-par alongside close friend Justin Thomas. The pair started as favourites and they are making good on that promise now.

THE MASTERS 2021: DECHAMBEAU FINISHES WITH A FLOURISH

It’s been a fantastic recovery from DeChambeau and he caps it with another birdie on the 18th. That’s a round of 67 from the US Open champion, leaving him six shots back of Rose. It may yet be too far, with so many fine players bunched behind the leader, but it provides evidence that the ‘Mad Scientist’ can indeed find a formula to work at Augusta.
