Thierry Henry visited the Bournemouth training ground in 2018 to give the players some advice during Eddie Howe’s tenure at the club.

Three years on and the Frenchman is the favourite to take the vacant manger’s position on the south coast, once he leaves his post at Major League Soccer side Montreal.

Newcastle midfielder Ryan Fraser was at Bournemouth at the time of Henry’s visit and revealed what he told the players – providing a brief glimpse at what he may bring to the Cherries for the remainder of the season, should he get the manager’s job.

“We were in a meeting and were told we had a special guest coming in and then Thierry Henry walked in and we were like, ‘What?! Is this real?'” Fraser said in 2018.

“Thierry was saying he wanted to respect his team-mates by showing he was better than them – not to make them annoyed or to frustrate them.

“He felt he had to go out on the pitch and be better to show them why he was keeping them out of the team so I thought that was interesting as well because in football a lot of things go on behind the scenes and you don’t want people taking your spot.

“I didn’t know, when you’re that good a player, do you just go into training and say: ‘I’m already the best, I don’t need to show it today, I’ll do it in the game on the Saturday.’

“He said no, everyday in training he was there he wanted to be the best player – he wanted to show everyone that he was the best and I think that was good insight.”

Howe, who stepped down as Bournemouth boss in 2020, added: “Thierry was excellent.

“He spoke to the players at length about his career and how he was successful so it was a really beneficial talk. It was very interesting to see the reaction of my players to what he said… and hopefully they will take something away from it which will affect them for the future.”

As revealed by Mirror Sport, Henry is the front runner for the Bournemouth job, but ex-Huddersfield boss David Wagner is still in the mix.

The Cherries hierarchy are a big fan of the World Cup winner who has so far managed Ligue 1 side Monaco and MLS outfit Monreal.
